Ten Years Later... (A Note to Jake and Dylan)

Its' difficult to believe it's been 10 years since the 9/11 attacks. It is for us, who witnessed it on our TV screens, watching the city and Towers we love be attacked so brutally. For many, it's been a long 10 years. Loved ones killed, having to raise a family without spouse, children growing up without their parent(s). It breaks my heart.

Approximately six years ago, bloggers who wished to participate were given a name of one of the victims to write a Tribute. The name randomly selected for me was Stuart Meltzer. He was 32 years old and had a young family he loved very much. He was on the 105th floor working at Cantor Fitzgerald when the the North Tower was hit. His wife, Lisa, was left to raise their sons Jake age 3 and Dylan still an infant. Each year I repost the Tribute to Stu. When returning to legacy.com each September, I see there are always new posts. Thoughts for the family and memories of Stu. I can feel his brother Ken's pain writing his message to Stu every year. Reading these has left an indelible mark on me. The senselessness of his death. His family left behind. Lisa, Jake, and Dylan have been in my thoughts and prayers ever since. Honestly, they pop up in my head at random times during the day, on holidays, wondering how they are doing. Are the boys okay? I cry. I pray. I want to know that they are doing all right.

This year, I received my answer. I'm so thankful that Rachel Meltzer contacted me after seeing the Tribute I reposted last year. It was truly a gift from heaven to hear from her.

Stu's sons Jake (13) and Dylan (10) are doing well. These boys and their mother are doing well due to the strong family surrounding them. Stu's brother, Larry, almost immediately took it upon himself to be their in Stu's place for the boys. Coaching baseball teams and taking them to Boston Red Sox games (I'm convinced Stu was their biggest fan). He has been there for Stu's wife Lisa when she was in need. It seems the family all moved to Long Island to help Lisa with raising her sons. What an incredible family.

Rachel's words tell it best:

"I humbly submit that my husband has been the most incredible person I know in his unwavering singular support and love of Stu's boys since that time. He is a star in my eyes and a rare individual in the eyes of so so many in this community.

Plenty of people were 'committed' to the children and widows after 9/11. But time passes and people forget and move on. Not Larry, he has put his whole life focus on honoring his brother's memory. He is a center of the Syossett Baseball Association and has coached the oldest nephew Jake, since the time of Stu's passing just about -- came out every weekend nearly from NJ in the first few years, then in 2007, we all moved here (including his parents from Cape Cod) to be near to the boys. Larry not only mentors those boys, but is always there when Lisa (Stu's widow) needs a helping hand in any way. Stu would be immensely proud of Larry, and in life, they were absolute inseparable best friends in a way that is rare and beautiful to see. The Meltzer family is a baseball family and through the coaching and Larry's commitment to SBA and taking Jake and Dylan to Red Sox and local Mets games, he keeps this alive. Stu pitched in college at University of Michigan and was a great athlete. Larry too played in college and still plays in a competitive over 40 league. Not only does Larry do for those boys we love, but I feel his example of how valued his brother's memory is is a testament to what it means to prize family. Our family, our 4 children, see every day what defines a commitment to family. The world doesn't put their money where their mouth is often enough and family gets a lot of lip service but not follow up action and reality. Larry is steadfast and inspiring. That's my take and what I can offer that others may not have perspective on.... "

In the recent article, Jake recalled hearing about the death of Osama Bin Laden. It was on the day of his Bar Mitzvah. Uncanny, eh? Jake felt it was a gift from his dad on this special day. His mom, Lisa, stated, "He feels like his father gave him that gift. It was a milestone in Jake's life. It was as if Stu wanted to say 'I'm here. This is my gift to you.'"

Jake and Dylan are members of Tuesday's Children which is a non profit organization for all the children of 9/11. Jake searches the internet looking for something about his dad that he didn't know already. The boys do not remember much of their dad. They were so young! Well, Jake and Dylan, I did not know your dad personally, but I sure wish I did. From reading all of the comments by his friends, I admire him greatly. I admire your mom for being so strong for you. I admire your dad's family for 'stepping up to the plate' and being their for you. Speak with your dad's friends since childhood. Hear all the stories they tell. Write them down. Don't forget any of them. Collect photos of your dad. Look at the pictures some of his friends keep on their desks to this day as a reminder of their good friend, Stu. The more you see and hear, the closer you will feel to him. Know that your dad is looking over all of you. He's always there. He never really left. Talk to him frequently.

Honestly, Jake and Dylan, to know your dad's true character, integrity, and knowing what to truly value in life, you only need look as far as your family. Look to your mom, your grandparents, and your Uncle Larry who seems to be a mirror of your father. Know that one day you will see your dad again. Until then, you have an angel and warrior watching over you.

To everyone reading this post, time has passed and we all go on with our very busy lives. Remember, it's not so easy for everyone who lost someone on 9/11. Yes time goes on, but there is still a gaping hole in their lives. Don't forget them. You can watch all the television specials on this 10th Anniversary, but I felt more of what the families are going through by reading Edith Lutnick's new book. Cantor Fitzgerald lost nearly 700 of their 'family'. Their fight continues to this day.

Social media today is becoming insane. The combination of Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, etc, it's easy to keep up on what is happening with everyone you know. Hence, this poor blog has been horribly ignored.

So, it's time to update all of you on the latest of the kiddie sessions!

First up is sweet Emersyn. Her little personality is blooming!

While in Chicago visiting my daughter, I had the chance to play with these two gems. Tyler, I think you had way too much fun after the heavy rains!

The first of the new little babies this year. These two girls are so precious! I have known their mom since she was little girl and hard to believe she is has two children of her own. Where does the time go.

This group is growing up too quickly also. I believe it's easy to see we are related.

And little Taylor. Remember her One Year Old session? yeah. This girl is a ham for the camera now! She knows how to work it.

Sweet Zoey. She was such a little trooper in the horrible heat! Within 30 minutes, the poor thing was soaked. Next year when she is three, she will be hamming it up like Taylor!

And this crew... What can I say? This is what happens when it's too hot to do anything at all. You jump over to my house and have a little fun! I could have done this all day long...

That's all for now, but Maddie is coming up next week and I am super excited to see her! Hopefully the heatwave will give us a break, so I can get all the Senior Reps done and posted. 2012 Seniors are going to be awesome this year (as always).

Reflections

Everyone has a purpose when they are brought into this world. Some people know at a young age what they are born to be. Others, not so much. I was in the 'not so much' category. Winter is so tough on my psyche. No studio to work in over the months. No sense of purpose. This winter was no exception. As I crawled under my blanket, I began to really think about what is wrong with me! The light bulb turned on and it hit me like a ton of bricks. When I received my 'pink slip' (the girls grew up), I truly lost my career. I was born to be a mom. Period.

I believe that's why I love photography so much! Catching all your little ones as they are. Catching images of them as you will remember them when you are in my shoes. You will look at your daughter as she walks down the aisle and think, "how did this happen so fast!" "I want to go back. I want to do it all again. I want to cherish every laugh, smile, antic, even every whine, tear, and temper tantrum!" I am reliving my life as a 'mom' through you and your children. And the Seniors! The hopes, dreams, faith, and love that holds for your future is shining through you and makes my heart smile!

Even though I'm not a full time mom now, I have all of you and my sweet adorable grandchildren. This sweet little girl today makes my heart leap for joy when she walks in the front door!

I look forward to a visit from my "Texas Tornado" Jaden who turns 8 this week! I look forward to the grandchildren to come (no pressure guys). I look forward to cuddling with the new addition in our extended family! I look forward to 2011 and seeing all of you! I hope to have a mini studio in my home by summer for the rainy days and winter months.

I suppose this is a thank you. Thank you to my daughters for continuing to 'need' me. Thank you to all their childhood friends who share their families with me now. Thank you to my grandchildren who give their love unconditionally. Thank you to all my wonderful customers for sharing their families with me. Thank you to the Seniors... you keep me young. Thank you for giving me a purpose again.

Stanberry

The end of September, I travelled to Stanberry, MO for some mini sessions. Needless to say, the weather did.not.cooperate! It was drizzly, rainy, cloudy, partly cloudy, and CHILLY! The town of Stanberry is an AWESOME place! If I lived closer, I would do tons of sessions there.

With the weather not cooperating, we were very limited as to space we could use. We had a great covered walkway and a covered gazebo in the park. That was it. Cram 10 adults and nearly as many children into that space and we pretty much had chaos and little people creeping in and out of pictures taken. Everyone remained in good moods! Pull out a few umbrellas and tutus will please at least the little girls. The babies are ADORABLE, the little ones 'smiled', and even the two dogs sat still if even for a moment.

Thanks to Nicole, Stephanie, Kelly, Tammie, Kari, and Melissa for such a great morning! I love your families!

A Little Bit of Everything { Kansas City Photographer}

Today I'm going to catch up on what's happening! My last few posts have been about dear, wonderful people fighting the Big C. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. I know Matt and Hollie, along with their families will appreciate it! More Hollie updates will be coming. I believe she is in her fourth week of chemotherapy now.

  On September 17, The Great Midwest Balloon Festival arrived in Overland Park! This was their first year and judging by the tremendous turn out, I know this is going to be successful in the future! This is a charity event with all proceeds going to Hospice and other various charities. There were 38 pilots the first year. The musicians donated their time for the festival also. Naturally, Pat was there and he opened up the festival with his solo playing. They didn't kick him off the stage, so that's always a good thing.

  I am setting up Mini Sessions for the end of October and first part of November. If you haven't had a family portrait done in awhile, you need one! Christmas is just around the corner and prints make wonderful gifts, as well as those Christmas Cards that need to sent out to family and friends! The times are booking quickly, so let me as soon as possible if you are interested.

  I think the rest of this post will be a few pictures from my latest sessions. Not everything is posted on Facebook, because believe it or not, there are people that are not on Facebook. :)

Taking It All Off!

Sunday was a big day! Only the most incredible people were allowed to attend the event! Parrot felt particularly honored to have been asked to be there for the long anticipated 'going bare' day.

Hollie has been feeling well, but the chemo effects are beginning. It was time for the event everyone, especially her eldest daughter Brooke, had been anticipating. Take one last look. This is the last time you will see this head of hair for about 2 years.

Of course, she really didn't have far to go. Her hair is so short already. :) Her girls, Brooke and Kennedy ran their fingers through her hair one last time! Although, I think Brooke enjoyed more than Kennedy.

Hair stylist extraordinaire, Jeanne, prepped for the first phase by putting the clips in place and preparing the... CLIPPERS.

Brooke took the first swipe at mom's head. Now, Brooke is not a teenager, so I know this is her way of taking this chapter "head on" in her way... or maybe she just wanted to use the clippers??

And so it went. Brooke was really getting into this 'head shaving' thing as mom longingly looked at her mane in her hands and saying goodbye... for now.

Now, anyone who has even met this gal KNOWS this could not be just a SIMPLE ceremonial shaving of her head.

She needed to take advantage of the opportunity to rock the style she has secretly dreamed of sporting. I do believe Brooke was truly getting into this head shaving thing.

Yep, Brooke took full advantage and felt the power with those clippers in her hand.

Hollie's husband, Gary, had his request also. And yes, this was his shave style request before it all came off.

(Insert redneck joke here)

When all was said and done. Brooke had finished the task of shearing her mother completely bald and she did an awesome job! Hollie actually looked FABULOUS!

She is TOTALLY GI JANE!!

Brooke suggested she wear a scarf on her head for her soccer game. Scarves are so stylish now.

I don't know. Pretty good look for Hollie, don't you think? Brooke and I broke out singing "It's a Hard Knock Life" at this point. Maybe she needs a 'different' scarf.

No matter how you look at this, Hollie just looks fabulous bald! She only needs wigs live out her fantasies of having long hair and to keep her head warm in the upcoming winter months! Hollie TOTALLY ROCKS BALD!

Totally Wigged Out! {Kansas City Portrait Photographer}

Today, Hollie received her second round of chemo. After her first round last week, no extreme ill effects. She tires easily and wants to sleep A LOT! It will probably be a few weeks before she loses her head, I mean hair, but it's never too early to prepare! Wednesday morning, she had an appointment with incredible Patty at Brian Joseph's to choose her new look for the next year and a half. Since, Hollie has very short and very thin hair, she was excited to try on the alter egos that surrounded us in the lovely shop. Much of the time, I just felt like I was being watched by a hundred eyes. Patty has a pretty amazing selection of wigs and products for women battling cancer. I was blown away with everything available from eyebrow/eyelash cream to help keep them during treatment to creams for the burns that occur with radiation therapy. Amazing. It's come a LONG way since I worked in Radiation Therapy 30 years ago. (did I just admit that?)

Patty also has pretty shiny things in her shop which just brightened the whole place up and made me smile. Girls do love pretty shiny things.

I had no idea there was SO much to know about wigs! Synthetic vs human hair, hand woven vs machine stitched and on and on. So much to think about and consider!

After soaking up all this information, the fun began! First the nylon cap since she hasn't lost her hair yet.
The discussion of 'bald caps' then popped up. I wouldn't be surprised to see Hollie next wearing a 'bald cap' just for fun and grins!

At this point, the real entertainment begins! Hollie has very thin and very short hair. You know you always want what you can't have when it comes to hair. If you have curly, you want straight. If you have short, you want long. She can have ANYTHING she wants! The possibilites were endless....

until she began trying them on. So here are the different faces of Hollie as you probably have not seen before!

Here we have the Elvira look. Long, layered, and black. It's really, really strange seeing this gal with very long black hair when she usually has short spiky purple hair. So, on we went to the next one...

They say 'Blondes have more fun', but 'they' have obviously not met Hollie. This is what Hollie would like as a teenage blonde. ha.

Just because she is a soccer mom, does not mean she wants to look like one! Cannot imagine her EVER looking like this for long. Way too normal. :)

This is hair longer than she has ever been able grow on her head her entire life. I was pretty sure she was going to choose this one no matter what. What girl at some point in her life wants long luxurious hair without it being a tee shirt hanging from your head??

Jennifer Aniston is adorable and we all secretly would like to look like her, right??? This is as close as Hollie will get. Nice. Not to 'normal', but not purple and spikey. Good look for her!

With this wig, she's ready to grab her guitar and hop in the VW bus. Woodstock or bust!

Then she saw it. Grabbed it. Put it on. Not only is it luxurious long hair, but she became J-Lo instantly! Hairbrush sufficed as microphone and she demonstrated her ROCK STAR skillz. Oh yeah. Definitely, J-Lo.

It seemed as if she had chosen the two wigs to live with for the next couple of years. One luxurious long hair wig and the 'Jennifer Aniston' style. We headed to the desk to get all instructions and more goop needed help with all the side effects soon to come from therapy when we spied what seemed to be a beam of light from heaven in the next room. We looked up and it's as if the angels sang. There it was. The wig that was Hollie. We looked at each other and it was that 'Oh Yeah' look.

JOAN JETT! The moment she put that wig on, we knew it was the one! Now she is a total and complete ROCK STAR! She has always wanted Joan Jett hair. Now she has it. What a glorious day!!

She is one happy gal. Joan Jett and long luxurious hair she has never had in her life! She was totally ready to rock her new style as we left Brian Joseph's two hours later. Great choices girl.

I do hope your chemo went well today. Hang in there. Only two more years and new boobies!

B-B-Q!!

Who doesn't love a BBQ?? Saturday I attended a BBQ and pool party with hubby tagging along for grins. This was a fundraiser for a young man who has been diagnosed with lung cancer and is a dear friend of Zoey's mom (Kara). You all know Zoey! So we had to go and of course, I had to take my camera.

I must say, I don't know Matt, but he must be one pretty phenomenal guy! So many people attended and gave freely to help him and his little girl. Amazing group of people. His mom and brother were also in attendance, as well as his little girl. Matt could not make it with all that he is undergoing now. The band that performed was "Exit Plan" and they were AWESOME! Jeff Furst played a solo set first and thought for a moment it was hubby up there taking over the microphone. So, you know I loved Jeff's set!

The image above is a few of Matt's friends who bought the T-shirt with his artwork on the front, website on the back. Yes, I do have mine and love it! By the way, all you friends of Matt out there... your body art is incredible!! I was extremely impressed with all the gorgeous (is that the proper word?) tats.

All the pictures I took Saturday are available on DVD from Kara for $10. Every cent goes to Matt.

Matt, our family's prayers are with you and your family as you battle this enemy. I don't know you, but I have been moved by all who love you.

LIVE LAUGH LOVE and CANCER

Yesterday my sister's best friend began a journey. It's going to be a long one. This is a journey we all fear and wish no one had to encounter. Hollie has Stage 2 breast cancer of the aggressive sort. She has two young children ages 10 and 6. This battle will stretch over the course of about 1 1/2 years. Knowing Hollie, she is going to kick this cancer in the butt. Her positive, fun, adventurous, and hilarious look on life will be her saving grace.

She has successfully had her first chemotherapy treatment. It took all morning to administer it into the port on her chest.

So, we went to hang out with this crazy gal for awhile. As always, her attitude was unbelievable. Her cousin Chelsey will spending most of her free time at Hollie's to help around the house and with the girls. Chelsey, you are going to be a God send to Hollie and her family.

Of course, we will all be there for Hollie during this chapter in her life. I will do my very best to document as much of the journey as possible for her. (Looking forward to wig shopping day!)

My sister, well, she will be at Hollie's side at every single step for any need or want of this crazy woman. She will be there for her little girls. What's two more at Jeanne's home?

What Can You Do In Thirty Minutes?

Today was Taylor's day. I cannot believe it has been a year since we took her portraits! We knew the weather was going to be sketchy, so we happened to arrive a bit early. That was a very good thing. We were only 30 minutes into her session when the heavens opened up! Pretty successful session, all things considered. I believe the tutu saved the day! How she loves that tutu.

The Maniacs

I was able to enjoy a baseball game today with one of my favorite baseball players ever (and my favorite french fries in the city at 3&2 ball park!). Jack and his team "The Maniacs" have been in a tournament this weekend, which consisted of about three games a day. These boys don't give up! They are AWESOME!!!

I had the immense pleasure of photographing this sweet family up north this week. Bruce and Dawn's daughter graduated from 8th grade and grandparents travelled to Kansas City for the big event! It was a must that we take advantage while they were here in our fine humid city. Rachel is absolutely gorgeous and Gracie told me some great little stories while she posed and picked up rocks.

Many of you already know Lindsay. Lindsay is a junior at Benedictine College studying Biology/Chemistry. She volunteers for several organizations such as Boys and Girls Club and Benedictine’s Hunger Coalition. She spends her fall and spring breaks on mission trips helping those more unfortunate than herself. This seems to be a calling for Lindsay.

In Lindsay's own words, "What I have grown to love is the Christian belief that Christ resides within every individual person and therefore every person should be treated with respect, dignity, and honor. In charity, I am able to see the poor, sick, and vulnerable not as a problem, but rather as individual human beings who long to receive and to give love."

This summer Lindsay has the opportunity to spend time at San Lucas Mission in Guatemala. She spent time there on a school mission trip back in 2007 and fell in love with the Guatemalan people. She is amazed at the joy and love of these hard working people despite their great poverty. Although Lindsay will be of great assistance to them, she believes they will enrich her life more.

Lindsay normally works the entire summer to earn the money needed to pay her tuition. In order to make this trip to San Lucas Mission, she needs to raise the remaining amount needed to attend Benedictine College next year. While she will ‘give by going’, you can ‘go by giving’.

If you wish to help this amazing young lady make this mission trip, you can! Sue Ables Photography will make it easy for you! If you are planning a family, child(ren), or Senior photo session this year that you’ve been putting off for too long, pay for your session ($75) by April 30, 2010 and it will go directly to Lindsay’s Mission Fund! Actual session can be scheduled for any time. Lindsay will try to chronicle her journey and share it with all of us through a blog, if she has internet capabilities while there. We will keep you posted and share the information for that when it becomes available early this summer.

2011 Senior High Search!

Winter is finally coming to a close! Not too soon for anyone. It has been brutal. But now it's time to look forward to warmer weather and 2011 Seniors! It's not too soon to begin scheduling your Senior Portraits!

I am looking for 2011 Seniors to be model reps! What does this mean for you? If you are chosen as a model rep, you will receive your photo session for free, receive representative cards to pass to everyone, featured on the SueAblesPhotography website, and have the opportunity to earn some extra cash!

I have a few opening lefts at area high schools, so contact me if your interested to be added to the list!

2010 SENIOR MODEL AGENTS

It's time to get a glimpse at the incredible young ladies who are Model Agents for Sue Ables Photography. I appreciate all the work they have put in this summer! It has been an honor to get to know you girls better and I hope you won't be strangers after you leave high school.

Okay, okay... I hear you. It has been a crazy, crazy summer. I do have the 2010 Senior Model Agents out there, so find one of them to get a discount on your Senior Portrait Session!

I have been remiss and have not posted as each Model Agent session was completed, but now you get them all at once! No mistaking it, you can find one of these girls somewhere in Johnson County! School is back in session and with high school sports, you will find one of them roaming around, dancing during half-time, or cheering on the Varsity team.

These five girls were an absolute joy to photograph. I LOVE SENIORS!!! They are so full of life and their individual personalities entertained me all summer! As you all know, I miss my daughter very much and even miss her hectic high school days. These five girls have made it easier for me.

Each girl chose their areas to be photographed. The girls were able to choose which images went on the website. They have been an integral part of my new website just for Senior High.

In the world of Catholic schooling we like to celebrate. This includes graduation at the end of 8th grade to celebrate FINALLY getting out of that elementary school and heading to HIGH SCHOOL!! YES! And so it goes for my nephew. He graduated Saturday from his grade school and cannot wait to get to high school. He went to a very small private school which is growing slowly. Consequently, he was the only the graduate this year. Let's hear it for the smartest, kindest, funniest, cutest, most likely to succeed, most likely to fall on his face, most popular person in his class! Who else can say that. Not many.

Congratulations Joe! Hope to see you more often at your new school down the street.

Beautiful Day for Roaming...

Yesterday was a beautiful day. I had been stuck in the house for awhile and had the itch to just get outside and shoot! So, I grabbed my gear and headed out the door to parts unknown. I ended up in the city scouting some new locations for Senior Portraits. A bit tired of the same locations and wanted to find some fresh views. IT FELT SO GOOD!

I began my journey in the Rivery Quay/City Market area. Since it was Monday, it was pretty quiet. That was perfect. No rushing. I could troll the streets without people honking at me to hurry it up. I did come across this walkway that stretches out over the river. When looking through the grates on each side, you can see big city bridges. It is a very cool walkway with little lookout areas. It does have a stairwell that goes down to the railroad tracks, but I don't think I will venture there. I have a feeling there are a few residents down there and not sure I'm feeling that neighborly. But the walkway is awesome and will try a few shots with actual people
soon.

I then roamed through the city towards Crown Center. I decided to get off the 'main drag' a bit and see what kind of buildings and structures I could find. What a good idea. I came across this old bus that is parked in a lot (obviously not going anywhere) and had been painted with graffiti. Another cool find! I will give this one a try also with an actual person soon.

I haven't shot a 'landscape' in quite awhile and really miss it. I proceeded up the hill to Penn Valley Park where the statue of "The Scout" is located. It is a Kansas City landmark and overlooks the skyline... well, what skyline Kansas City we have here. I took this shot and made into an HDR (High Dynamic Range) photograph which gives it some depth. Next time, I will have my tripod on my shoulder to take the appropriate shots needed to make a good quality HDR photograph. For now, this is okay for me. I was out shooting what I love.

Next to 'The Scout" is a skate park. There happened to be two guys practicing rolling around. Action shots are the most exciting for me and the most challenging. Skaters are my favorite subjects. They see me coming with the camera and all of sudden they think they can tricks they have never attempted before and nearly kill themselves trying! These two had brains. They just continued what they were doing and allowed me to practice. I haven't taken any of these shots since last summer due to lack of time. Rusty I am. I will make it a point to get back out there more often! But, fun it was! Thanks boys!

At that point, it was getting to be late in the afternoon. It was my baby sister's day off. I don't see her much now that she decided to work. After stopping for a couple of Mocha Frappacinos I headed to her house. On such a gorgeous day, all the kids (and a few extras) were out in the backyard having a great time on the swing sets, eating popsicles, and just being kids. Her kids are my favorite models. I walk in the door and the first words are "take my picture!" . Yesterday was NO exception. Especially on the monkey bars! These are a few shots of the little hooligans on a warm sunny day doing what kids do best!

The RESCUE of the ABDUCTED

A few weeks ago, I was told about an event that was to take place on the Plaza at the JC Nichols Fountain and would continue to Penn Valley Park to the statue of 'The Scout', as well as cities all over the nation and all over the world. I was told hundreds of people were going to 'abduct themselves' in unity with the children in Africa who are abducted from their homes and families by a tyrant named Joseph Kony and forced to become child soldiers. This story sounds familiar doesn't it? Sounds like something similar we have heard about that part of the world? Atrocities ignored, voices unheard? I was told to go to a website to learn about "THE ABDUCTION" and "RESCUE". I was told to go to the Invisible Children website. I went, I read, I listened, I searched, I was appalled. Who will stand up for these children? For these families? Uganda and the Congo have nothing of value that powerful countries in the world want or need. They are ignored or forgotten

Saturday, April 25th, I had a couple of hours free at the time the 'abduction' was to begin on the Plaza. I went with my camera in hand. I had no idea what I would come across. It's been a long time since the protests, marches, and rallies of my youth. There haven't been many since. Most 30-something or 40-something year olds have never even thought of doing this. So, I thought I would look in on this event.

Everyone who signed up or even showed up last minute signs in, signs a banner, writes a letter to Congress on behalf of the 3000 children still being held by Kony. They 'abduct' themselves. They unify themselves with all those children for just one night. They march two by two holding a rope from JC Nichols Fountain to Penn Valley Park (about 2 miles). They remain there until they are 'rescued' by someone of power or notoriety. So they are noticed.

I got to the fountain a little early and started firing off a few shots. Then the kids started rolling in. KIDS! College kids. High School kids. Junior high kids. Even a few kids with their parents. I.was.amazed. The power of texting, Facebook, and My Space is amazing! I know there has been a growing movement in community service. My nieces are involved and travel during their holidays to places like New Orleans, Galveston, Guadalajara, wherever help is needed. They are high school age. But to see all these kids strolling into the park area with their backpacks and sleeping bags, standing up and giving a voice to children on the other side of the world was something to witness. The kids were excited. Some came in pairs, some in groups. But they came... to unite as one... one voice.

I have included a collage of some of the pictures I took at the beginning of this 'event'. I was keeping an eye on these kids through the invisible children website. The website allowed each 'Abduction Site' to check in when they were able. If you recall, Saturday night was when we had all the tornadic activity. That did not phase these kids. I know they stayed put! I was watching the 'Breaking Weather' and a reporter was talking about the bad weather on its way. Then she pointed to the 'Abduction Site' and said basically that the crowd at Penn Valley Park must not have any idea about the weather, because they looked like they were out having a good time! hmmm...... Well, I did fire off an email immediately. To the reporter's credit, she responded IMMEDIATELY! And she had NO idea this event was happening. She was actually reporting another story when the weather story took over.

So, I'm wondering, who the heck is going to 'Rescue' Kansas City if even the news crews don't know it's happening?? I had no reason to be concerned. There was a rock band in town playing Saturday night by the name of Switchfoot. As soon as they finished their concert, the boys hopped into their transportation and raced to site where all the kids were waiting to be rescued. They pulled out their gear and played for them! Kansas City was rescued! That doesn't mean they go home. If I understand this correctly, everyone stays put until all cities are 'rescued'. It took until well into Sunday before they could go home.

This generation is different. This generation is pro-active. This generation gives me hope.

Update: It is Tuesday night at 9:30 pm. The Rescue began last Saturday evening. There is one city left that has NOT been rescued. Can you believe it is CHICAGO? Chicago? Home of Oprah? That is disheartening... I don't know the number of people, but I hear at least a thousand people in Chicago wait... wait... after four days continue to wait... to be rescued.

As I said before. This generation gives me hope.

"FLUX" (the band)

Flux is a local classic rock band packed with incredibly talented musicians from Kansas City. Charlie keeps the boys in line with his incredible drummin' skills. He also is a 'sound dude' around town, so you may see him helping out other bands. Drew is the 'cool' bass guitarist and 'front' guy who keeps the crowd going in between songs. Mark... well, Mark is a kick tail lead guitarist! If I can, I will put up a player with a sample of one of their Pink Floyd covers. Mark is pretty amazing on guitar. (don't get mad guys... you are ALL GREAT!) Then there is Pat. What can I say? I LOVE THIS GUY! He plays EVERYTHING! He is the keyboardist. He also fills in with guitar, flute, sax, violin, harmonica, or whatever else the song calls for, except cowbell.. I want that one!

These four guys have been in bands forever and have recently gotten together to form FLUX. They needed a picture for their demo CD to get out around town and for promotional material. During band practice last weekend, we went for it. After a couple of beers, they thought the canoe would be a GREAT IDEA! Then Charlie decided to stand up. It came very close to tipping over and threw a band member into a panic, but it all ended well. I had a blast with these guys. They are not only the most talented musicians I know, but four of the greatest guys I know!

Easter at Grandma's

Easter was spent with family. As we waited for everyone to arrive, I took a quick shot of my sister's family. She was fortunate to have her entire family present! Both girls were home from college. It had to be quick as little Lucia only wanted to RUN!

We had a big easter egg hunt for the kids at Grandma's house. There were fourteen cousins present to enjoy the festivities. This is the big spring event the kids look forward to each year, especially the kids who are little older. The hunt is on for the one egg out of 185 that contains that on $5 bill! The boys usually find it and this year was no exception. This year Luke was the lucky one! Congratulations Luke on finding THE egg of the year!

It was a gloomy, dreary, soggy day, but all had fun anyway!
